[Top 5] Mysterious Portals to Underworld

2018 is a great year to travel, but… the last place you would want to visit is probably the Underworld, or Hell. However, we are all fascinated by myths and legends of these ‘gates’ or ‘portals’ to the pits of hell found in our world . So let’s dive down and explore these top five mysterious locations to the underworlds:

1. Paris Catacombs

Under Paris are some 200 miles of tunnels used for excavating limestone that built the city in the 13th century. These underground catacombs are filled with enormous numbers of skeletal remains. They pattern the walls of the Parisian underground. If that wasn’t creepy enough, strange stories of disappearing people have occurred. Even experts seem to unexpectedly lose their way.

2. Tunnels at Baiae

A curious find in the nearby ruins of Baiae known as the Antrum was discovered in the 50’s. The elaborate, carefully made tunnels run under where apparently the tunnels lead to a stream of near-boiling waters and sulfuric smells with a platform large enough for a small boat to pull up, matching the fabled river styx and descriptions in Virgil’s texts of where the hero Aeneas exits Hades.

3. Skinwalker Ranch

Commonly known as Sherman Ranch, this place, located in North Eastern Utah, actually covers all of the weird paranormal activity you can think of—ghost-like poltergeists, shape-shifting humans, and interdimensional portals meet thousands of reported UFO sightings. According to Navajo culture, skinwalkers, which are humans that can shape-shift into animals of any sort have been sighted here.

4. Houska Castle Gothic Chapel

This castle exits with no fortifications, no kitchen, and no water and no one lived there at the time of its completion. Why would a castle be built in the middle of a hill with no benefits, tactically or occupationally? Lore has it that during Ottokar II of Bohemia’s reign in the 1200s, a deep hole existed here—so deep that it’s bottom could not be seen. Half-human demon-beasts were said to have been seen near it with the occasional black-winged creatures flying into its depths.

5. St Patrick’s Purgatory

St Patrick’s Purgatory is an ancient pilgrimage site, which dates from the the fifth century, on Station Island in Lough Derg Ireland. This place was the answer to Saint Patrick’s prayers when he asked God how to convert disbelievers to Christianity. In a vision, God told Saint Patrick that people would believe him if they were shown the purgatory; it would expose them to the reality of the torments of hell and then of the joys of heaven.
