A ban on selfies on the red carpet in Cannes caused confusion and disappointment among guests at the film festival’s opening night on Tuesday, May 8.
Organisers say the practise has got out of hand in recent years causing delays and a health hazard with some distracted guests tumbling up the famous steps.
But most of all, festival director Thierry Fremaux said the pictures are “ugly” and detract from the glamour of the world’s most famous film festival, where those attending the evening screenings must wear black tie.
A small logo with a crossed out camera appeared on guests’ tickets and security guards could be seen policing the new rules to the surprise of many.
The opening film was “Everybody Knows” starring Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem. The festival runs until May 19.
